Relationship: A Felt Sense

In its broadest sense, relationship is a connecting principle; we can have relationships with anyone or anything, including ourselves. Relationship is ineffable, yet we know it exists because we feel it. The medium of fibre invites touch, and felt is made from many tiny fibres connecting. By pairing fibre with expressing ideas about relationship, I hope to invite our felt sense in a tangible way.

Human relationships serve different levels of connection and move through stages as they develop. Wool turned into felt is an ideal medium and process to express relationship because with sustained attention, energy and touch, what begins rather insubstantially as fluff gradually solidifies into strong, solid material. Our relationships begin with imaginations, hopes and dreams and if we continue to focus on and put energy into them, they form robust bonds.
